This is a review for the Figma Figure of Yui Takamura from Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse by Max Factory.So this is my second of hopefully MANY more Figma characters to come and I'm happily finding some GREAT trends common to entries in this series of collectible figures from manufacturer Max Factory.First as always: Detail. If the Devil's in the details then he's clearly taken up residence in whatever production facilities these things are manufactured at because this particular figure is a tribute to excellent paint jobs. Again we're working with a small scale and when you take into consideration the accuracy of the colors and tight precision of the painting details on something only meant to stand 6" tall you're really dealing with something special.As with the Black Rock Shooter Figma I reviewed, there has to be some sort of elf or gnome they are paying to paint the eyes and small details because they are pretty fantastic and just spot on. Additionally, in Figma signature fashion you also get a character with alternate expressions that you can switch in and each of these faces is painted to the same level of care and precision making this presentation a truly stand out job considering both scale and that this is mass produced.From the paint, next you have the sculpt and there's not TOO much to really say. The Muv-Luv Alternative characters all of them, from the games and the Total Eclipse anime characters are all wearing plug suits (term coined for skin tight interface suit used to pilot mecha from the iconic anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion). Thus due to that factor aside from color schemes about 70% of the body is fairly devoid of actual sculpted features. The parts that are there are given exquisite detail.As mentioned the faces are done well but the hair modeling and coloring is done even better. Yui only comes with one set hair style which makes sense since she REALLY only had one in the series. The younger Yui had something more of a close cropped hair cut and didn't really show off much to work with so the Adult Yui I feel was a better choice to stick with on that aspect.From her hair you have the only other parts of her sculpt you can comment on and that is her armor, what little there is, that is incorporated to her plug suit which includes: segmented shoulder covers both upper and lower, her collar pad, some narrow hip plates and her boots. The shoulder pads are hinged and will actually move around if the arms come in contact with them for high arm poses like a mid over head strike with her included katana, so that was a nice design implementation to prevent restriction of movement. Also, the hip plates may restrict total range of movement, however they offset the line gap between the top of her leg/thigh and her joint socket just under her right and left buttocks. From an aesthetic perspective this was a good move because it preserves the natural lines and depth of the figure without highlighting the joint too much.Authenticity note: I can't honestly remember whether or not the profile hip plates were actually on her plug suit but considering Figma's exacting demands on accurate representation I can assume it existed at one time either on her cadet or her officer's version of the uniform (both were the same color schemes or close to it so its easy to mistake them for the exact same suit if there is a difference). Beyond that her suit and body proportions are sculpted well so it doesn't look like she has clown feet even though she has armored boots but is wearing a skin tight body suit and in addition I'm really glad Figma didn't enlarge her breasts too much to align with the anime. In the anime it was kind of a main draw and obvious fan service to seeing the girls suit up BECAUSE it accentuated their boobs to the point where every girl had a J-cup but from a design perspective it might put the figure off balance and reliant on the included stand, limiting free standing posing options.As for accessories and gear, Yui Takamura and likewise all the characters from the anime series are pretty much useless without their TSF mecha suits so the included accessories are pretty much a gimme by Max Factory and greatly appreciated. First, she has a bevy of addtional hand models. These allow her to have a bit more personality in her poses by mixing up her body language but there's not much to say since that's the only purpose they serve. There is only one weapon and one scabbard so the hands are not all designed as functional as much as they are for aesthetics.Second is her medium curve katana. This is more of a traditional design, the curve is distinct on the blade and the grip fits the characters hands well for a one or two handed pose. The color scheme is in keeping with Yui's color scheme throughout and comes with a scabbard that takes an all black lacquer approach with a purple themed decorative sageo. The scabbard itself comes with a partial katana including grip, guard and about a fifth of the blade. I'm not sure the purpose behind it, since it appears you can fully sheath the full size katana in the scabbard but I think because the katana blade is a bit on the brittle side they added the partial katana so you can still do mid-action blade draw poses without risking the blade of the full katana breaking off in the scabbard due to improperly positioned hands adding stress on the sheathed blade section. To be honest I think it'd have been cheaper to just build the full size katana out of a more springy or stronger plastic or make the blade a few microns thicker just to withstand bad pose positions while sheathed or partially sheathed rather than provide a dummy hilt but whatever that's nitpicking.Articulation-wise, Yui is pretty good at poses but generally shines in using her arms since those are the most unrestricted limbs. She's a bit stiff in the neck due to her hair being in the way and being very long and her legs have good front to back movement but the hips as mentioned are a little restricted in horizontal movement ranges due to the integrated hip plate armor. Her ankles like that on my BRS Figma can swivel forward and back but lack any side to side movement. It's a mild irritation but its worth noting. Overall, she can strike quite a few poses and with the provided clear plastic Figma stand you can guarantee she won't tip over but unlike other Figma's because of the design style of her plug suit's armor boots she can also maintain some free standing poses with some careful placement of her feet and suitable leg positions.In Review: This is a great figure. She's just the right size you'd expect and an actual figure deserving of the action figure moniker due to the thoughtful inclusion by Max Factory of an actual action figure accessory set. (THANK GOD they didn't make a representation of her in her officer uniform with a clipboard accessory or something). The paint detailing is the real star of the show with fantastic attention to detail and crisp, sharp colors with anime perfect color saturation levels. She is reasonably articulated but unlike the Black Rock Shooter Figma, in comparison she'd appear somewhat limited if not stiff. Still Max Factory did a good job of hiding the joints in the usual places and did a +1 on masking the hip joints which are prime examples of ugly gaps in a lot of action figures models so kudos to them on that.Final Recommendation: Buy. She's pretty affordable as far as Figma's go. On Amazon.com she's at 48 and change as of the time of this review and if you like Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse she's the clear entry for anything that doesn't have "model kit" in her product description. Wish I could say the same for Cryska Barchenowa who just released in the Figma series but they gave her a crappy pistol as her only accessory so far as I can tell and Cryska's color schemes leave a little wanting but that more of a character design flaw than anything on Figma's part. They just recreate what they are given after all. For maximum enjoyment consider also getting: Mitsurugi Meiya from the Muv-Luv Alternative (game) set. I believe she is the game alternate of Yui's character and serves as main character or love interest. She also has a katana with red scabbard, beautiful dual shade gradient hair and a complementary design when placed next to Yui in a crossed swords standoff.
