Description
The first U.S. Navy aerial photographs were taken in 1913 in support of fleet exercises off Guantanamo, Cuba. Following WWI, a Navy Photographic expedition went north, making the first aerial mapping photos of the Alaskan territory. WWII found Navy shuttermen in the Pacific theatre, performing pre- and post-attack reconnaissance, along with “hitting the beach” to record the war as it unfolded. Shortly after, Navy photographic units were in the Pacific to record early atomic bomb tests. The Navy’s aerial photo reconnaissance mission, both at the front end with the weaponless aircrews and the output of thousands of images and photo interpretation, continued to develop through the mid-20th century. The last aerial photo plane in the Navy’s inventory was retired after flying to the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum Annex at Dulles International Airport in Fairfax County, Virginia. The 74 year odyssey of Navy and Marine Corps aerial reconnaissance photography was finished.

I very much enjoyed reading this book! The author did incredible research and documentation and presents the information in a readable format. The sub title is very accurate and indeed delivers, THE HISTORY ON U.S. NAVAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND PHOTO-RECONNAISSANCE.Much to recommend, from the Alaskan photo-mapping surveys of the 1920s, 30s and 1950s to the Navy and Marine Photo Squadrons and their aircraft, in war and peace, from WWII through Vietnam to their disestablishment in the 1970s and 1980s.Many significant historical events interwoven in chronological sequence, including early US Antarctic expeditions and Operation DEEP FREEZE, and photo-mapping of many other areas of Earth.A bonus is the development of Photo Interpretation in the Navy and Marine Corps and its critical significance in the Pacific Theater in WWII.The text includes many names of Naval & Marine Aviators, many of which were enlisted pilots, and Photographers Mates, some of which were people I have know. For historians researching the history of Navy & Marine Photo Squadrons, Appendices A and B are worth the purchase price! Appendix C, USN & USMC PHOTO RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT ON DISPLAY, lists not only the aircraft and their locations, it includes photographs and historical information about each aircraft.
